Diving in Varadero

Varadero is located in the province of Matanzas, about 140 km northeast of Havana and 16 km from Cárdenas. The famous vacation and bathing area in Cuba is located on the north coast of Cuba, stretching about 30 kilometers along the northern strip of the Hicacos peninsula. Varadero has a variety of modern and comfortable hotels, 3 diving centers and a variety of leisure activities.

There are 3 dive centers at the beach of Varadero. The diving base ACUA is located at the entrance of the peninsula, the BARRACUDA diving center with the marina Chapelin lies in the middle while the very modern diving center GAVIOTA is located at the end of the peninsula in Marina Gaviota.

Diving Base Barracuda

Diving in Playa Giron & Playa Larga

In this zone, the diving spots are accessed from the shore (offshore dives). The underwater grounds are very attractive here thanks to the steep ocean cliffs, which are close to the coast and are full of very beautiful black corals, gorgonians and colonies of sea sponges.

There are 12 different dive sites on the coast and in the speleological underwater system of Zapata, which lie along the 30 km long Bay of Pigs (Bahía de Cochinos) and the Caleta Buena. The average water temperature is 28-29°C while the water is so clear that you can see everything underwater and there is rich flora and fauna. Here you can practice scuba diving almost all year round.

Diving in Cienfuegos - Faro Luna

The town of Cienfuegos lies in Jagua Bay at the entrance to the Caribbean Sea. Due to its strategic location, the place was used by pirates for a long time to attack Spanish ships. It was not until the middle of the 18th century, when the Spanish managed to control the situation by building a fort. Cienfuegos owes its former wealth to a thriving sugar industry. Thus, at the end of the 19th century most of the magnificent buildings of the sugar barons were built. Today, the numerous buildings, such as the Palacio del Valle, can be admired, from where it is possible to enjoy a wonderful view over Jagua Bay. Furthermore, Cienfuegos is an ideal starting point for excursions into the surrounding area, for example to the Hanabanilla Dam in the Escambray Mountains or to the Jardín Botánico Soledad botanic gardens, which lie about 25 km outside the city and which hold 2000 of the most unusual tropical trees and plants.

Around a quiet bay, on the Caribbean Sea, French emigrants from Bordeaux and Louisiana founded the ‘Colony of the Jagua’ on April 22nd, 1819. In 1830, when it was held up as a city, they accepted the name ‘Cienfuegos’ in honor of the General Governor of Cuba, Don José Cienfuegos. Fifty years later, it received the status of ‘town’ and because of its stunning beauty, it was nicknamed ‘The Pearl of the South’. The flourishing city became one of the most important cities in Cuba towards the end of the 19th century.

Because of its splendor, it is considered a Cuban gem of 19th century architecture. Cienfuegos is characterized by the perfect street layout, the refinement and good taste of the buildings of the historical city center (national monuments). It is home to several of the most important buildings: The preserved house of the founder, the Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción Cathedral, the Ferrer Palace and the José Martí Park, on which the only triumphal arch that exists in Cuba arises. Especially worth seeing is the Tomas-Terry Theatre, which was preserved in its original state for more than 120 years and in which Enrico Caruso often stayed in the twenties. In the outskirts of Cienfuegos you will find a replica of the Parthenon/Greece as a cemetery portal. The centerpiece of the city is the Palacio Del Valle, a unique castle villa in the Moorish style.

You can reach Cienfuegos in comfortable air-conditioned vehicles from Havana or Varadero in about 3-4 hours. 350 km away from La Habana, Cienfuegos has about 100,000 inhabitants and is surrounded with factories and industrial activities related to the processing of citrus fruits. Cienfuegos is a well-preserved and fascinating colonial city from the 19th century located in a huge, beautiful natural harbor, with the largest sugar-loading port in the world and a small international airport. A little further from the city center and at the entrance of the bay, you can find the fortress Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Jagua.

Also worth mentioning is the Yaguanabo valley, a very wild, primal hinterland with waterfalls and crystal clear jungle lakes and a cave with Latin America's largest stalagmite (67m).

Day 2: Havana

Breakfast. At 08:30 am you are picked up at your Casa Particular. Discussion about the day’s tour.
Sightseeing trip through the center of Havana. Every alley and almost every single house is lovely in the historic center Habana Vieja and you can find photo motifs and places to linger around en mas. We will take you on a walk through the historic city center La Habana Vieja, protected by the UNESCO. The city was founded in 1519 together with the first seven cities in Cuba. The city tour leads us to the Plaza de Armas, the Templete, the fort Real Force Castle, the palace San Francisco de Asis and the Cathedral Square with a visit of the cathedral in no particular order. You will also be able to have a short look at the original restored presidential carriage from 1910. On one of the rooftop decks we will enjoy a tropical refreshing drink while having an excellent view over the photogenic rooftops of Havana. Together we will take a stroll through the shopping streets Calle Obispo and Calle O’Reilly past the Hemingway Bar Bodeguita del Medio and then to the arts and crafts market. On the way we will take short breaks in the narrow alleys of the historic city and next to special buildings. We will look at colonial inner courtyards and learn a lot about the capital Havana and their stories.

All drinks are optional and at your own expense! Lunch will be at a local restaurant!

Capitol Havana

After lunch you can get to know Havana further in a vintage car. On your way you will visit the Cementerio Colon, the second-largest graveyard of Latin America. During a tour through the roughly 100.000 grave memorials, of which 90% are made of marble, you will hear about many stories about this museum-like graveyard. Then, we will have another stop at the place of the revolution, the revolution square with the freedom memorial, an obelisk in the late Art Deco style. This is the place where Fidel Castro held his famous speeches in front of the masses which changed world politics. As soon as it reopens, we can take the lift up to the observation deck located in the head of the obelisk. From here you have a fantastic view over the whole city. Then we drive on through different colorful parts of the city until we reach the finca of Ernest Hemingway which lies a little outside the city. We continue on to the village San Francisco de Paula, where Hemingway used to have soughing parties with many famous greats from the movie scene, the mafia and even politicians in the 50s. Hemingway acquired this manor, the ‘Finca la Vijia’, with his Nobel prize for literature. The former residence and its furniture survived the test of time really well and is nowadays the Hemingway Museum in Cuba. It can’t be entered but you can even see the writing instruments, many souvenirs brought back from various trips, as well as personal things from the life of the famous author through the open windows.

From there we continue on small roads and the city highway until we reach the fishing village Cojimar. This is the place where the great US American novelist and author Ernest Hemingway used to stay and listen to the tales his captain called Gregorio told him and then used those to write his nobel prize-winning novel ‘The Old Man and The Sea’. There will be a short stop at the Ernest Hemingway bar (drinks optional) and during a visit at the memorial located here you will learn many historic details about this famous man.

Classic Car Havana

Now we drive back along the Playas del Este, the eastern beaches of Havana and its seaside paradise where the natives who come here in Summer spend their holidays, all the way to the place Casablanca with its impressive statue of Christ. The wife of dictator Batista wanted to calm down the agitated and protesting people by ordering the erection of a replica of the statue of Christ of Rio on the elevated eastern bank of the seaport. It was not as big as the original but could be seen from all of central Havana. The place Casablanca is located opposite to the historic city center on the other bank of the port entrance. Here you have an unforgettable chance to take some pictures next to the Cristo de Habana. On the elevated deck next to the Cristo, you have a fantastic panorama view over the entire city center and the outskirts, the port entrance and a part of the harbor, the fort El Morro and the Malecon and also the seaside promenade of Havana. Here you can also clearly see why the city was built in this location and why Havana is the most important Pass-Through-Port for the gold of the new world. We underpass the port in a tunnel and drive along the Malecon into the city center of Vedado and then stop at the Hotel Nacional with its gorgeous park. From the 33rd floor of the Focsa and the highest building of the city, we can provide a breathtaking view over the skyline of Havana.

Capitol Havana

On a drive through the green lung of Havana with its many parks, we can show you the Miramar district in which 90% of the embassies are located. Most of them are situated in the countless beautiful mansions.

Here, we visit the famous artist Jose Fuster in his Mosaic-Street. He created a tribute to the Gaudí in Barcelona with his mosaic art. At the end of our tour we drive through the Sybone district, which is a suburb of Havana that is often compared to Beverly Hills. Afterwards we will reach your accommodation which is where the 5 – 6 hour long tour ends and also where you will be able to say that you experienced and got to know Havana for certain.

Here you will visit the cigar factory ‘Francisco Donatén Vegueros’. Stopover at the farm ‘El Paraíso’, where you will get to know the kindness and hospitality of the farmers in Viñales.

Day 6: Havana – Guanabana - Yumuri - Matanzas - Bellamar- Guanabana – Havana

After breakfast at approximately 08:30 we start our day trip in a vintage car to the north coast. We enter the Casa Blanca district through the Tunnel which marks the entrance to the port of Havana. The port tunnel, built by a French company before the revolution is a symbol of corruption and the private enrichment policy of the ruling powers of that time and the American Mafia settled here at that time for many Cubans.

First, the almost worthless plot located north east of the port, which is only very hard to reach from the city that lies south of the bay, was bought up extremely cheap. Then, by the tunnel that was built, the plot gained in worth massively, whereof the rulers and mafias benefitted and a new coastal road, the Via Blanca, was built all the way to Varadero. After that a completely new city district was constructed for expensive mansions at wide Avenidas.

The revolution stopped the project and it constructed a Cuban variant of social housing with multistory simple apartment blocks on parcels of land already prepared for constructions. They were a convenient home for many thousands of families right at the edge of the capital.
Now, multiple city districts emerged through the development of the tunnel in the north east. Today, these city districts are called Blanca, Alamar and Habana del Este.

We drive to Via Blanca and continue along the Carretera Central to the village of Guanabana. We take a short detour to the famous eastern beaches of Santa Maria del Mar and Guanabo. In the next town, Santa Cruz del Norde the biggest rum distillery of Cuba is located, the Havana Club. With a short photo stop you can take a look at the rum factory. We continue along the coast towards Matanzas.

Between Jibacoa and Matanzas lies the fertile and scenic valley of Valle de Yumuri and the low mountains of Alturas de Madruga y Coliseo. We then take a well-deserved break at the viewpoint at the largest and highest road bridge in Cuba, the Bacunayagua. Not only the view over the valleys of Yumuri is impressive here, but also the freshly prepared and best Pina Colada in Cuba. In Matanzas we find an old an interesting pharmacy and a fortress with the slavery museum. At that time, Matanzas was the most important slavery port of Cuba and of the new world. There were frequent slave riots, which were bloodily crushed by the Spaniards. Matanzas owes its name to the slaughtering of the slaves.

We now make a detour to the viewpoint of Montserrat on a hill at the edge of the port city. From here you have a very nice view over the city, the harbor bay, the sea and the fertile valley of Yumuri. Here, a chapel for the Black Virgin of Montserrat was built by the northern Spanish immigrants from Catalonia on a ridge above the town of Matanzas.

Lunch in a restaurant in Matanzas.

Yumuri

On the way, shortly after Matanzas, we visit the famous cave of Bellamar, if open. After a long drive the cave is a welcoming place to cool down. We continue along the Carretera Central to the village of Guanabana. There is a country road leading to the village of Cidra. Here is an important memorial to the history of slavery of Cuba. In addition to an impressive monument for the slaves who led and did not survive a slaves' uprising, also really interesting are the well-preserved ruins of the sugar mill Triumvirato, which was totally destroyed by the slaves during the revolt in the 19th century.

From here we go straight to Varadero. Dinner in a Paladar.

Breakfast. Then you will be picked up at 7:30 a.m. Departure.

Today you can be looking forward to a stroll through the beautiful colonial city Cienfuegos. The central square is the Park José Marti, with its ornamental bushes, iron lanterns and shadow-giving royal palms. The theatre ‘Tomás Terry’ was inaugurated in 1895 with the sounds of ‘Aida’. The magnificent building, which has a capacity of 920 visitors, captivates with its three-story balconies and lodges of hand-painted pine wood and carved mahogany-decorated interiors. Next to the Cultural Center (Casa de Bienes Culturales) you will see the Cathedral ‘La Purisima Concepción’. The Gotteshaus (the house of God) with its 12 mighty windows symbolize the 12 Apostles and was completed in 1870. Another highlight is the Palacio del Valle, which was built in the beginning of the 20th century and now houses the Museum of Decorative Arts.

Lunch in Cienfuegos.

Cienfuegos

After lunch we continue our trip from the provincial capital of Cienfuegos to Trinidad de Cuba, one of the best-preserved colonial cities in America. Trinidad, a colonial city declared by UNESCO as a Cultural World Heritage site, was founded in 1514 and was an important center of slave trade, the sugar industry and an influential cultural center. After arrival and check in at your accommodation you can enjoy a first city tour of Trinidad through the labyrinth of red roofs, historic mansions, artfully designed balconies, door and window shades. Time seems to have stopped here. The museum town with its old cobblestone streets and venerable colonial buildings charms turns time back 500 years. Small evening stroll through the city.

Accommodation: Trinidad, casa particular/guesthouse B&B.
Incl.: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Tip for the evening: Live Cuban music is played in several restaurants and bars in the city of Trinidad. A good idea would be visiting the Casa de la Trova, where Cuban music is played by old and young bands and where Cuban and foreign visitors come to dance. (Optional)

Day 14: Trinidad – Valley of the Sugar Mills - Sancti Spiritus – Havana

Breakfast. In the morning, we will visit Trinidad by foot without a fixed program. Then, we will make photo stops in central Plaza Mayor Square, which is surrounded by numerous historic buildings. In the church ‘Parroquial Mayor de la Santísima Trinidad’ stands a famous wooden statue of Christ and a mahogany altar. Visit one of the numerous museums in Trinidad. Visit the Cuban bar ‘La Canchanchara’.

Trinidad Museo Romantico

Lunch at a restaurant in the region.

After lunch, you will go to the valley of sugar factories ‘Manaca Iznaga’. Towards the end of the 18th century, around 50 sugar factories made this zone one of the most prosperous of the island. Today, ruins and remains of some sugar factories can still be visited. Here we can also see the ‘Manaca Iznaga Tower’, which, at a height of 45 meters and built in 1816, was created to monitor the slaves at their work. The bell announced the beginning and the end of the working day. After a panoramic drive through the Valle de los Ingenios, we continue our trip to the colonial provincial capital of Sancti Spiritus.

After a panoramic ride through the Valle de los Ingenios, our journey goes through the southern foothills of the ‘Montanas Guamuhaya’ and Escambray mountains on a very narrow road with heavy traffic. In the village of San Francisco we take a detour in the tropical mountains. On narrow and sometimes steep and curving mountain roads, our way leads into the heart of the mountains of Guamuhaya to the Natural Park El Nicho. Here we hike into the cool climate and shallow waterfalls where you can get refreshed with a nice swim. Enjoy the tropical forest, the cooling waterfalls and take a swim in one of the natural ponds.

Don’t forget to bring your hiking boots and a swimming suite along. From here we go back to Havana where we arrive in the evening. Dinner.

The diving area around Havana has a coast length of almost 100km and is a very interesting area for diving with a 3km long strip with countless coral reefs. Wreck enthusiasts are particularly welcome here, as these reefs include one of the most active and historic navigation routes in the Caribbean around Cuba which is centuries old.

Our diving trips lead along the entire coast of Havana with dive sites that start from ‘Hotel Copacabana’ in the western part of the city to the ‘Marina Hemingway’, situated a bit further away, which is the largest yacht in Havana’s harbor. 25 km further towards the famous Playa Salado up to the far East at the Playa del Este and the second largest marina of Havana, the marina ‘Tarara’ lies, 22 km out of the city.

The diving program in Havana offers beautiful coral reefs, steep walls, an anchor cemetery of colonial ships and famous wrecks. Diving takes place from the land and with a small dive boat.

Wreck diving in Havana

The legendary treasure ships in the Bahia Havana:

Diving to the sunken ships in the Bay of Havana is once again being authorized. These treasures, surrounded by myths and legends sunk due to the hurricanes and sea battles and are a treat for wreck divers. These ships full of history form legendary epochs and lay between 20 and 60 m deep at the bottom of the sea. They also contain a large number of marine species in a colorful landscape with corals. The wrecks, which we will dive to, lie between 20-30 meters deep.

Very interesting dives are for example a Spanish crusader of the Spanish fleet, the ‘Sánchez Barcaíztegui’, loaded with weapons, ceramics and glassware that sank here in 1895, or the ‘San Antonio’ with a large load of pottery and ceramics in its interior. There are many wrecks in front of and around Havana and we are constantly expanding the wreck program and organizing it for you.

These wreck diving tours are carried out with a minimum of 4 divers.

Punta Perdiz 2 is the most visited dive site in the region, as it has a great charm, including small caves and good diving opportunities with a variety of sea flora and sea fauna.

At both dive sites, diving is carried out from small sections of the beach. The seabed leads to the depths of the sea in various stages. The first stage continues from the shore 120 meters far with depth of 4-6 meters. Then the next stage, which is about 20 meters long, leads into 10-12 meter deep areas.

El Tanque

This is a shallow water zone with excellent conditions for beginners.

El Cenote

El Cenote is a water cave. At the entrance it is 20-25 meters deep and in the tunnel 70-80 meters. The guidance rope is at a depth of 30 meters and leads to the 800 meter long tunnel, where you can observe the interesting rock formations of the cave walls. Near the surface, in a natural swimming pool, lives a great variety of species of sea fish while in the depths the red shrimp is abundant. Down to 3-4 meters we dive in sweet water and down from there in salty sea water.

Playa Giron

El Jaruco

As it is a deep dive site, it is only recommended for experienced scuba divers. The name comes from a sunken ship that is close to the insular coral wall (Wreck Dive). The beginning of the dive is carried out from a quay with stairs. The entrance depth is 10-12 meters. The insular coral wall is 20 meters deep and about 160 meters away from the coast. There are large sand surfaces with different colonies of sea snail species, sea shells, Quincontes and others. You can also find exotic coral fish in large swarms.
